About...
My name is Kristen McCann. I became the reading specialist at Center Street School in August 2015. I earned my undergraduate degree and teaching credential at Villanova University. I moved to Los Angeles to teach in a volunteer teaching program, working at a small school in East Los Angeles. There is where I fell in love with teaching and being part of a school community. I earned my Masters at LMU in Child and Adolescent Literacy and a few years later, continued for my Reading Specialist Certificate. I came to CSS with 9 years of classroom teaching experience and 3 years of experience as a Reading Specialist.
My role is to support students, teachers and the parent community. Through literacy intervention, students learn the skills and strategies they need to become competent and confident readers. I collaborate with teachers as we learn about best teaching practices to meet the needs of the students. Finally, I plan schoolwide literacy events and share literacy resources with the greater CSS community.
Through literacy intervention, I work with students on the skills they individually need to become stronger readers: phonemic awareness, phonics, high frequency words, comprehension, fluency, decoding strategies, writing and more. I also collaborate with teachers, as we try new instructional methods in reading and writing. I assist teachers with individualized assessments at the beginning of the year and periodically through the year, so that we can all use the assessment information to inform our instruction for your child’s learning.
I look forward to getting to know you and your children and having a great year at CSS!
